MADRID, Spain (June 21, 2023) — Cigna Healthcare has become the first health insurer in Spain to integrate artificial intelligence for dermatology assessments, selecting Legit.Health's image analysis technology for its Doctor Cigna telemedicine application.

The deployment addresses a systemic challenge in Spanish healthcare. Ministry of Health data show approximately 20,000 patients wait for dermatology consultations at any given time, with average delays reaching 75 days. The Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology estimates that more than 70 percent of dermatology cases could be managed remotely through telemedicine.

Under the new system, primary care physicians using Doctor Cigna can photograph skin lesions and upload images to the Legit.Health platform. The AI analyzes the images in real time, identifying potential conditions, assessing severity, and flagging signs that may indicate malignancy. Physicians use this analysis to determine whether patients require specialist referrals or can receive treatment through primary care.

"Technology innovation in dermatology benefits both patients and our specialist doctors," said Elena Luengo, innovation director at Cigna Healthcare Spain. "Patients can now receive initial skin assessments from home, while our physicians gain diagnostic support that helps them make more informed decisions."

Andy Aguilar, chief executive and co-founder of Legit.Health, said the partnership reflects growing demand from insurers to improve dermatology access.

"Artificial intelligence has become essential to new dermatology treatments and diagnostics," Aguilar said. "By giving primary care physicians objective data about skin conditions, we help patients receive appropriate care faster while reducing unnecessary specialist visits."

The Legit.Health platform uses deep learning algorithms trained on clinical images to detect and measure skin conditions. The software supports assessment of more than 400 dermatological conditions and calculates severity scores using standardized clinical scales.

Cigna Healthcare serves more than 1.5 million members in Spain. The company said it plans to expand AI-assisted services across additional medical specialties.
